Please read this before you use Narbis hardware for the first time, and keep it where you can find it again. It is short, and everything in it matters. This information is provided by Narbis, Corp., a Delaware corporation ("Narbis", "we", "us" or "our").
1. Read this first#
1.1 This document covers the Narbis Smart Glasses, Narbis Edge, the Narbis ear clip, the Edge sensor kit and Narbis accessories, together the Hardware.
1.2 The most important points, in one place:
- Narbis products are wellness tools and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
- The lenses tint and clear while you train. That is a changing visual stimulus. If you have epilepsy, a seizure disorder, or any sensitivity to flashing or changing light, talk to a clinician before you use Narbis Hardware.
- Never wear Narbis Hardware while driving, cycling, operating machinery, or doing anything where dimmed or changing vision could hurt you or someone else.
- Stop using the Hardware if you feel unwell, and tell us at info@narbis.com.
2. What Narbis is, and what it is not#
2.1 Narbis Hardware is general wellness equipment. The Smart Glasses record an EEG signal. Edge records a heart rate signal and derives heart rate variability from it. Both give you feedback by tinting and clearing the lenses.
2.2 Narbis Hardware is not a medical device. It is not FDA cleared or approved. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or condition.
2.3 Narbis does not measure, detect, screen for or rule out any medical condition. A Narbis session is not an EEG examination, not an ECG, not a diagnostic test, and not a clinical assessment. Nothing the Hardware or the app shows you is a diagnosis or a medical finding.
2.4 Do not use Narbis Hardware in place of medical care. Do not change, delay or stop any treatment, medication or therapy because of anything you see in a Narbis session. Talk to your clinician about those decisions.
2.5 Training results vary from person to person. We do not promise any particular outcome.
3. Talk to a clinician before you start if any of this applies to you#
Please get advice from a qualified clinician who knows your history before your first session if you:
- have epilepsy, a seizure disorder, or have ever had a seizure;
- are photosensitive, or have had symptoms from flashing lights, strobes, screens or patterns;
- have a history of migraine with aura, or migraines triggered by light;
- have a brain injury, a neurological condition, or have had brain surgery;
- have an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a neurostimulator, a vagus nerve stimulator, a cochlear implant or an insulin pump;
- have a heart condition or an arrhythmia, particularly if you plan to use Edge and heart rate sensors;
- have a psychiatric condition under active treatment;
- are taking medication that affects seizure threshold, alertness, blood pressure or heart rhythm;
- are pregnant;
- have a skin condition, an open wound, or a known allergy to silicone, nickel or adhesives on the areas where the Hardware or sensors sit;
- have any visual condition that affects how you handle changes in brightness.
This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure, ask.
4. PHOTOSENSITIVITY AND SEIZURE WARNING#
4.1 THE NARBIS LENSES DARKEN AND CLEAR REPEATEDLY DURING A TRAINING SESSION. THIS IS A CHANGING VISUAL STIMULUS AND IT IS PRESENTED DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES.
4.2 A SMALL NUMBER OF PEOPLE MAY EXPERIENCE SEIZURES, BLACKOUTS, ALTERED VISION, EYE OR MUSCLE TWITCHING, INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENT, DISORIENTATION, CONFUSION OR LOSS OF AWARENESS WHEN EXPOSED TO FLASHING LIGHTS, CHANGING LIGHT LEVELS OR VISUAL PATTERNS. THIS CAN HAPPEN TO PEOPLE WHO HAVE NEVER HAD A SEIZURE AND WHO HAVE NO KNOWN HISTORY OF EPILEPSY.
4.3 DO NOT USE NARBIS HARDWARE IF YOU HAVE PHOTOSENSITIVE EPILEPSY, A SEIZURE DISORDER, OR A HISTORY OF SEIZURES TRIGGERED BY VISUAL STIMULI, UNLESS A QUALIFIED CLINICIAN HAS TOLD YOU IT IS SAFE FOR YOU.
4.4 STOP USING THE HARDWARE IMMEDIATELY, REMOVE IT, AND SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IF YOU OR ANYONE USING IT EXPERIENCES ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: CONVULSIONS, TWITCHING OF THE EYES OR MUSCLES, LOSS OF AWARENESS, ALTERED CONSCIOUSNESS, DISORIENTATION, INVOLUNTARY MOVEMENT, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, VISUAL DISTURBANCE OR ANY SENSATION LIKE THE START OF A SEIZURE.
4.5 IF YOU HAVE A SEIZURE OF ANY KIND WHILE USING NARBIS HARDWARE, DO NOT USE IT AGAIN UNTIL A CLINICIAN HAS ASSESSED YOU AND CLEARED YOU TO RESUME.
4.6 Sensible precautions that reduce risk for everyone:
- train in a well lit room rather than in the dark;
- do not train when you are very tired, sleep deprived, unwell, dehydrated or under the influence of alcohol;
- keep early sessions short and build up gradually;
- take a break between sessions;
- do not train alone the first few times if any of the risk factors in the section on talking to a clinician before you start apply to you;
- if a session feels wrong, end it. There is no benefit to pushing through.
4.7 If someone using the Hardware is having a seizure, do not restrain them. Remove the glasses if it is safe to do so, move hard objects away, put them on their side once movements stop, and get emergency help if the seizure lasts more than five minutes, repeats, or the person does not recover normally.
5. VISION, DRIVING AND MACHINERY#
5.1 NARBIS LENSES TINT WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE HARDWARE IS IN USE. YOUR VISION WILL BE PARTLY OBSCURED AT UNPREDICTABLE TIMES.
5.2 DO NOT WEAR NARBIS HARDWARE WHILE DRIVING, RIDING A BICYCLE OR MOTORCYCLE, OPERATING A VEHICLE, BOAT OR AIRCRAFT, OR OPERATING ANY MACHINERY, POWER TOOL OR EQUIPMENT.
5.3 DO NOT WEAR NARBIS HARDWARE ON STAIRS OR LADDERS, NEAR ROADS, NEAR WATER, NEAR HEAT SOURCES, AT HEIGHT, WHILE COOKING, WHILE CARRYING SOMETHING HEAVY OR HOT, WHILE HOLDING AN INFANT, OR IN ANY SITUATION WHERE IMPAIRED OR CHANGING VISION COULD CAUSE INJURY TO YOU OR TO ANYONE ELSE.
5.4 DO NOT USE NARBIS HARDWARE WHILE SUPERVISING A CHILD OR ANY PERSON WHO DEPENDS ON YOUR ATTENTION.
5.5 Train sitting down, in a safe place, with nothing around you that you could knock over or trip on. Stand up slowly at the end of a session.
5.6 Narbis Hardware is not eye protection and is not prescription eyewear. It is not sunglasses. Do not use it to look at the sun, at a welding arc, at a laser or at any bright source.
5.7 If you wear prescription glasses or contact lenses, follow the fitting instructions in the app. Do not modify the frame or the lenses to make them fit.
6. Skin contact, sensors and hygiene#
6.1 The Hardware touches your forehead, ears, nose and, with some sensors, your chest or arm. Skin contact matters both for comfort and for signal quality.
6.2 Start with clean, dry skin. Remove makeup, lotion, sunscreen and oil from the contact areas. This improves the signal as well as reducing irritation.
6.3 Stop using the Hardware if you develop redness, a rash, itching, swelling, burning or any skin reaction that does not settle shortly after you take it off. If it persists or spreads, see a clinician. Some people react to silicone, metals, adhesives or electrode gel.
6.4 Do not use the Hardware or a sensor over broken skin, a wound, a rash, sunburn, a recent tattoo or an area of skin infection.
6.5 Do not overtighten a headband, a chest strap or an ear clip. It should be snug enough to stay put and no tighter. Loosen it if it leaves a deep mark, aches, tingles or goes numb.
6.6 Clean the contact surfaces after every session, and let them dry fully before storing the Hardware. See the cleaning section.
6.7 Narbis Hardware and sensors are single user items. Do not share a unit, an ear clip, a chest strap or a headband with another person without cleaning and disinfecting it first, and never share consumable items such as adhesive electrodes, ear tips or gel. In a practice or a family with more than one trainee, give each person their own contact accessories.
6.8 Replace worn ear tips, nose pads, cushions and straps. They wear out, and a worn part gives a poor signal as well as being less hygienic.
7. Battery and charging safety#
7.1 Narbis Hardware contains a rechargeable lithium ion battery. Treat it with the care you would give any lithium battery.
7.2 Charge only with the cable and charger supplied with the Hardware, or with a charger we have identified as compatible. A cheap or damaged charger is the most common cause of battery problems.
7.3 Charge on a hard, flat, dry surface with air around the unit. Do not charge under a pillow, under bedding, on a sofa, in a closed bag or in direct sunlight.
7.4 Do not charge or store the Hardware in a hot car, near a heater, near a flame or in a very cold place. Keep it between roughly 0 and 35 degrees Celsius, that is 32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit, while charging, and let it return to room temperature before charging if it has been colder or hotter than that.
7.5 Do not puncture, crush, bend, drill, incinerate, disassemble, short circuit or immerse the Hardware or its battery.
7.6 Do not attempt to replace the battery yourself. It is not user serviceable. Contact us instead.
7.7 Stop using and unplug the Hardware immediately if you notice heat that is more than mild warmth, swelling or bulging, a hissing sound, smoke, an unusual smell, discoloration or leaking fluid. Move it to a non flammable surface away from anything that can burn, do not put it back on charge, and contact info@narbis.com. If a battery is smoking or on fire, leave the area and call emergency services. Do not inhale the fumes.
7.8 If battery fluid contacts your skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water and get medical advice.
7.9 Keep the Hardware, cables and small parts away from infants and pets. Cables are a strangulation hazard and small parts are a choking hazard.
7.10 Store the Hardware charged to roughly half capacity if you will not use it for a long time, and top it up every few months.
7.11 Dispose of the Hardware and its battery through an electronic waste or battery recycling program. Do not put it in household trash and do not burn it.
8. Do not use damaged hardware#
8.1 Look the Hardware over before each session. Stop using it and contact info@narbis.com if you see:
- a cracked, chipped or shattered lens;
- a bent, cracked or broken frame, hinge or temple;
- an exposed wire, a loose component or a gap in the housing;
- a damaged, frayed or bent cable or connector;
- a swollen, deformed or leaking unit;
- corrosion, moisture inside the housing, or a unit that has been in water;
- a sensor or ear clip with a damaged pad or contact surface;
- unexpected heat, an unusual smell or behavior that is not normal for the device.
8.2 A cracked lens can injure your eye. Do not wear the Hardware with a damaged lens under any circumstances.
8.3 Do not open, modify or repair the Hardware yourself, and do not have it repaired by anyone other than Narbis or a service provider we have authorized. Doing so is unsafe and voids the Narbis Limited Warranty.
9. Water, weather and environment#
9.1 Narbis Hardware is not waterproof. Keep it away from rain, pools, showers, baths, saunas and steam rooms.
9.2 Light perspiration from ordinary indoor use is expected. Wipe the Hardware dry afterwards. Do not use it during vigorous exercise unless the product documentation for that item says you can.
9.3 If the Hardware gets wet, power it off, do not charge it, dry the outside, and let it dry fully in a warm dry place with good air movement. Do not use a hairdryer, an oven, a microwave or a radiator. If it does not work normally afterwards, contact us.
9.4 Use and store the Hardware at ordinary indoor temperatures and humidity. Avoid dusty, sandy or chemically contaminated environments.
10. Children, trainees and supervision#
10.1 A Narbis account may only be created and held by an adult aged 18 or over. The account holder is responsible for the Hardware and for the safety of anyone who uses it.
10.2 A trainee aged 6 to 17 may use Narbis Hardware only with an adult present and supervising the session, from setup to the end. Do not leave a minor alone with the Hardware, and do not let a session run unattended.
10.3 Narbis Hardware is not for children under 6. Keep it, its cables and its small parts out of their reach.
10.4 A third party sensor may have a higher minimum age than Narbis Hardware. The adult supervising the session is responsible for checking the manufacturer's age requirement for any non Narbis sensor before it is used, and for not letting a trainee below that age use it. Where the manufacturer's minimum age is higher than ours, the higher age is the one that applies. See the section titled "Third party sensors".
10.5 Before a minor trains, please read the sections on talking to a clinician before you start, on photosensitivity and seizure warning, and on vision, driving and machinery with their safety in mind, and talk to their pediatrician or clinician if any of the risk factors apply. Children are more likely than adults to be affected by a visual stimulus, and a child may not report a symptom clearly, so watch them rather than relying on them to say something.
10.6 Watch a supervised trainee for staring, unresponsiveness, twitching, unusual movements, sudden fatigue, distress or a headache. Stop the session at the first sign of any of these.
10.7 Keep sessions short for younger trainees and stop earlier than you think you need to. Never make a child continue a session they want to end.
10.8 Check the fit on a smaller head. The Hardware should not press, pinch or slip. Do not use tape, elastic or any improvised strap to hold it on.
11. Pregnancy and implanted devices#
11.1 If you are pregnant or may be pregnant, talk to your clinician before using Narbis Hardware. There is no known specific risk from this equipment, since it records signals rather than delivering any current or stimulation, but the visual stimulus, fatigue, dizziness and fall risks described here still apply, and your clinician knows your circumstances.
11.2 If you have an implanted electronic medical device such as a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a neurostimulator, a vagus nerve stimulator, a cochlear implant or an insulin pump, talk to your clinician or the device manufacturer before using Narbis Hardware or any compatible sensor. Narbis Hardware and its sensors contain magnets, electronics and a wireless radio. Follow whatever separation distance your device manufacturer specifies, and keep Hardware and chest straps away from an implanted device.
11.3 If you use a chest strap heart rate sensor and you have any cardiac implant, do not fit the strap until your clinician has told you it is appropriate.
11.4 The wireless radio in the Hardware is low power, but in a hospital, on an aircraft, or anywhere that restricts radio transmitters, follow the local rules and turn the Hardware off if you are asked to.
12. Stop and get advice if you feel unwell#
12.1 STOP THE SESSION AND REMOVE THE HARDWARE IF YOU EXPERIENCE DISCOMFORT, HEADACHE, NAUSEA, DIZZINESS, LIGHTHEADEDNESS, VISUAL DISTURBANCE, EYE STRAIN OR EYE PAIN, DISORIENTATION, RACING OR IRREGULAR HEARTBEAT, CHEST DISCOMFORT, SHORTNESS OF BREATH, TINGLING OR NUMBNESS, SUDDEN FATIGUE, ANXIETY, LOW MOOD, AGITATION, RINGING IN THE EARS OR ANY SKIN REACTION.
12.2 Rest. Look at something far away for a while. Have some water. Most mild symptoms settle quickly.
12.3 Seek medical advice if a symptom is severe, if it does not settle, if it comes back each time you train, or if it worries you. Seek emergency care immediately for a seizure, loss of consciousness, chest pain, severe or sudden headache, weakness on one side, difficulty speaking or difficulty breathing.
12.4 Do not resume training until symptoms have fully resolved, and if they recur, stop and speak to a clinician before training again.
12.5 Some people find neurofeedback or biofeedback training tiring or emotionally activating, particularly early on. Shorter, less frequent sessions usually help. If training consistently leaves you feeling worse, stop and talk to a qualified professional.
12.6 Please tell us at info@narbis.com about any adverse effect or safety concern, even a small one. We take these seriously, we log them, and they are how we find problems early. Reporting to us is not a substitute for getting medical advice.
13. Cleaning and care#
13.1 Power the Hardware off and unplug it before cleaning.
13.2 Wipe the frame, temples, nose pads, ear clip and sensor contacts with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water, or with an alcohol wipe of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol on non lens surfaces. Wring the cloth out so that no liquid runs.
13.3 Clean the lenses with a dry microfiber cloth, or with a cloth barely dampened with water. Do not use alcohol, ammonia, bleach, acetone, solvents, abrasive cleaners, household glass cleaner, paper towel or clothing on the lenses. The electrochromic coating is easily damaged, and lens damage from cleaning is not covered by the Narbis Limited Warranty.
13.4 Never immerse the Hardware, never run it under a tap, and never spray liquid onto it. Spray the cloth, not the device, and keep liquid away from the charging port, seams and openings.
13.5 Let everything dry completely before you store or charge the Hardware.
13.6 Clean third party sensors and straps according to their own manufacturer's instructions. Rinse and dry a chest strap after each use.
13.7 Store the Hardware in its case, out of direct sunlight, away from heat, and where it will not be sat on, crushed or dropped. Carry it in the case rather than loose in a bag.
13.8 Keep the charging port clean and free of lint. Do not put metal objects into it.
14. Third party sensors#
14.1 Narbis works with compatible third party sensors including the Polar H10, Polar H9, Polar Verity Sense and COOSPO HW807 heart rate sensors, and the Muse 2 and Muse S EEG headbands.
14.2 Read and follow the safety instructions, warnings and cleaning guidance that came with each of those devices. Their manufacturers set those instructions and they may differ from ours.
14.3 Those devices are covered by their own manufacturers' warranties and support, not by the Narbis Limited Warranty. See that document.
14.4 Use only sensors listed as compatible in the Narbis app. An unsupported sensor may give unreliable readings and may not be safe with our Hardware.
14.5 Check the manufacturer's minimum age before a minor uses any of those devices. It may be higher than the Narbis minimum age, and where it is higher, the higher age is the one that applies. The adult supervising the session is responsible for checking it before use, and a trainee below that manufacturer's minimum age must not use that device. See the section titled "Children, trainees and supervision".
